ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Inspired by her heritage and upbringing, Liz Koch’s work places latinidad at the forefront. Her work is an examination of tradition, culture, memory, and diaspora within herself and her latine counterparts. As a second-generation Mexican, her work interrogates the shared experiences of those impacted by diaspora and the ‘identity crisis’ often associated with them. Much of her work considers interioirty, as she often looks toward her family for inspiration. Working primarily in still and video portraitaure, her work seeks to reveal her subjects beyond their physicality. She is intentional in that she prefers to exhibit her subjects with candor and present them in a way that is genuine and descriptive.
Throughout her career, she has worked on innumerable film and photography sets but finds herself most comfortable behind the lens. Her storytelling perspective is visually inclined as she is constantly influenced by her surroundings, regularly shooting those who are closest to her.  Most recently, Koch completed her undergraduate thesis which sought to examine memory and movement as told through archival imagery. Koch, in this work, reimagines the traditional Folklórico skirt and emphasizes the story-telling nature of the dance form. She aims to continue this momentum of work as she moves forward in her career.
